James Madison, America's 4th President

President James Madison was very similar to his predecessor, President Thomas Jefferson as both had the same political ideology and values.  President Madison’s life and career was devoted to public service from a very young age. He long admired being a student of history, law, and government, and spent his early years framing the Virginia Constitution, followed by service in the Continental Congress.  Prior to becoming America’s 4^th President, James Madison served as Secretary of State to President Jefferson for eight years.  Whereas Jefferson was very strong in writing, President Madison was at his best in public speaking, often times leading fierce debates regarding the political establishment of America.

While in Congress, he spearheaded the drafting of the Bill of Rights, earning him the nickname
“Father of the Bill of Rights.”  His heavy involvement as a Congressman was instrumental in the development of the Republican Party (also referred to the Republican-Democrat Party or the Jefferson Party).  This party was in competition with the Federalists to be the leading advocate for developing American policy and agenda.

During Madison’s Presidency, he asked Congress to declare war against the British, to send a powerful message that American independence from Britain was nonnegotiable.  The War of 1812, lasted only a few years, but provided America with a renewed sense of liberation, peace, nationalism, and prosperity.  It was during the War of 1812, that the Star Spangled Banner was written by Frances Scott Key.

Prior to the commencement of the War of 1812, lots of opposition existed from the North.  They felt it would be counterproductive to the economy, financially unsustainable, and that military personnel were inadequately trained. The anti-war establishment threatened to secede from America.   Opposition was led by the Federalists party and they were proven wrong.  America’s victory and the British surrender, led to the dismantling of the Federalists party and the blueprint for today’s two party system of Democrats and Republicans.

President Madison’s wife, Dolley, had a very charming and distinguished personality.  She is historically referred to as America’s “First Lady,” due to her social grace and welcoming demeanor. Although she was a widow with a child at the age of 24, that did not impact President Madison from falling in love with Dolley.  They were married in 1794, when she was 26 and lived a life of happiness, trust, and understanding of one another.  They had no children together, yet President Madison showed lots of patience to Dolly’s son, even though her son directly harmed President Madison’s financial affairs, by mismanaging his estate.

Thomas Jefferson, America's 3rd President

The Presidency of Thomas Jefferson was symbolized by various firsts in American history.  Besides being the first President to win an election versus an incumbent, he was also the 1^st President to enter the White House as a single man, as his wife passed away twenty years before he would lead America. 

As a leader, Jefferson was a stronger writer and thinker, than he was speaker.  He preferred sharing his ideas with the pen as opposed to using his voice.   Jefferson’s strength and ability to eloquently transition his wisdom to paper, led him to compose the initial draft of the Declaration of Independence, which was signed on July 4^th, 1776, ironically exactly 50 years before his death on July 4^th, 1826.

Prior to becoming President in 1801, Jefferson had a history rich in politics and civic engagement.  Besides being America’s first Secretary of State for President Washington, he also held positions such as former governor of Virginia, former Vice President of America, and former diplomat to France. 

In 1803, through Jefferson’s active negotiation of the Louisiana Purchase, he was instrumental in America purchasing 530 million acres of land from the French at a cost of $15 million. (Presently America is 2.3 billion acres in size, meaning Jefferson’s transaction represents ¼ of the USA).   His appreciation of the value of acquiring strategic land was attributed to him inheriting 5000 acres of land from his father’s death.

Jefferson’s Presidency was a dynamic time for American politics.  Two strong political parties, the Federalists and the Democratic-Republican, were vying for influence and power.   Although America was still young, its challenges were large.  Similar to today’s political climate of Democratic vs. Republican, the two parties of the Federalists and the Democratic-Republican had differing views on how to solve their issues and challenges. 

Surprisingly, at the time of Jefferson’s Presidency, America had a debt of almost $90 million and Jefferson worked diligently to reduce this debt.  With minimal chance for America to engage in war with the French and tensions diffused, Jefferson began to reduce the budget by shrinking military expenses.  His proactive policy of fiscal responsibility reduced the debt by almost 1/3 in a short period of time.

During Jefferson’s Presidency, the state of Ohio was added to the union in 1803, bringing America to 17 states.     Besides Jefferson founding the University of Virginia, he kept himself occupied by being an inventor, writer, linguist, and farmer.  He had a difficult time adjusting to life as widowed man and as such, his grown children and their families would often times occupy the White House with him, as evidenced by his grandson being the first person born in the White House. 

Day 2: President John Adams

John Adams has the distinction of being the first person to serve as both Vice President and President of America.  During his eight years as President Washington’s VP, he felt frustrated, underused, and underappreciated, often sharing with his wife how insignificant a role he had in America’s infancy.  He considered himself to be both a philosopher as well as a politician and often times struggled to distinguish the two.

President Adams was born in Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard.  Upon graduating, he started practicing law and eventually turned to politics.   As a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses, he was heavily invested in the American independence movement. Prior to becoming Vice President, he was an American diplomat who traveled extensively as evidenced by his positions in France and England.   His diplomatic overseas posts would serve him well as President, as this experience enabled him to strategically avert war with the French. 

During his four years as President, tensions were high between the French and the Americans as both countries were involved in naval positioning and various hostilities throughout the seas.   His leadership averted American involvement in a war and ended with a peace mission being sent to France.  Although war was avoided, various segments of America’s politicians were upset with Adam. This uproar at home partially contributed to Adams being a one term President.

Adams was the first President to reside in the White House, having moved to the home one year prior to vacating the office of President.   When construction of the White House was complete, President Adams shared a prayer with his wife, which remains entrenched in the White House for all visitors to see.  The prayer simply states, “I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house and all that shall hereafter inhabit it.  May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof.”

President Adams and his wife, Abigail had five children in ten years.  After his Presidency ended, he returned home to Massachusetts where he spent the next twenty five years of his life, up until his death on July 4, 1826.  Ironically, one of his biggest adversaries, Thomas Jefferson, who became America’s 3^rd President and won an electoral that made Adams a one term President, passed away the same day.

The final eight years of life were very difficult on him emotionally, as his wife preceded him in death in 1818.  Their marriage was one based on romance, love, friendship, and involved years of communicating via letters due to President Adams travels as a diplomat.  Unlike his wife, President Adams lived long enough to see his son become America’s 6^th President.

44 Presidents in 44 Days Using 444 words: Day 1 - President George Washington

George Washington was inaugurated in New York City on April 30, 1789, while standing on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street.  Upon taking the oath as America’s first President, it was his intent to establish precedence in all his future actions.   His precedence was based on the notion that principles would guide leaders as opposed to politics.

President Washington was born in Virginia to a farming family.  During his teen years, he became heavily interested in the art of military and western land expansion.  While a lieutenant colonel in 1754, he was involved in his first battle of what eventually turned into the Indian & French War.  At the age of 27, he married a widowed lady who was older than him and was a mother of two children from her previous marriage.  She also had two children who died as infants.  Although they never had children together as a couple, Washington was very fond of his step children. 

During the early parts of his marriage, he became quite agitated with the concept of British imperialism and regulations.  In 1775, as a member of the Virginia legislation, he attended the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia during which he was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.    For six years afterwards, he was heavily involved in a challenging war with the British, which ended with the British surrender in 1781 and the end of the American Revolution.

Upon the ending of the American Revolution, Washington was ready to retire from public life and live peacefully and quietly as a private citizen in Mount Vernon.   He came to the realization that the Articles of Confederation, were not functioning as intended, and thus aligned himself with the Constitutional Convention of Philadelphia in 1787.  This convention spearheaded the development of the US Constitution.   Upon ratification of the new Constitution, George Washington was unanimously elected America’s first President by the Electoral College.

President Washington strongly admired what the Constitution represented and stood for.  As such, he respected the powers of Congress, while balancing the needs of America.  He choose to lead America by having a neutral policy on various issues such as foreign policy, knowing that neutrality would make the country stronger, not weaker.   Upon finishing his 2^nd term as President, he died about three years post Presidency, at the age of 67 due to a throat infection.

While bidding adieu as President, his Farewell Address encouraged his countrymen not to develop long term alliances in foreign policy, minimize preferences based on geographical distinctions, and avoid excessive political spirit.  His wife passed away three years after him and both were buried in their beloved Mount Vernon. 

Un-United States of America

This past week, I was in Washington DC meeting various members of congress and their staff to discuss Syria and America's role.  I also attended the 59th Annual Conference of the National Chicken Council, where guest speakers included Chris Wallace of Fox News Sunday, Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, and Ambassador Nicholas Burns among others.

A few of the takeaways of the trip were:

1.  The only interest that matters in DC, is political interest.
2.  Every single person I spoke to or heard speak, where emphatic that President Obama's Syrian policy has been an absolute disaster.  A few of those included the offices of Senator Chambliss (R), Congressman Collins (R), Senator Coons (D), and Ambassador Nicholas Burns.  I did have a meeting with Congressman Kingston (R), but he never showed up as he was tied up with various elements of the government shutdown.  His office did apologize as I waited almost 45 minutes for him to show.
3.  I was told by a Congressman that he feels Jordan will be the next country to go through what other Arab Spring countries have (i.e. revolution).
4. A congressman told me that the Syrian conflict will not end until the Syrians decide it is in their best interests to stop killing each other.  He also said that it's too late for the US to get involved and involvement should have happened in the beginning as opposed to now.  When Obama made the statement, "Assad must go," is when the US should have gotten involved. This was before the foreign elements became involved in the conflict.  His concern now is if Assad goes, the group replacing him will be worse than Assad. Had we been involved in the beginning this would not have happened.
5. All of politicians, speakers, etc., grilled Obama for weakening America's credibility.  Obama was referred to as a paper tiger, someone who no longer appears strong, someone who has encouraged and empowered our enemies, and that for someone who has spent so much time talking about Syria, he should have done something about it.  The red line comment was a back breaker for many, ranging from behind closed door meetings of the intelligence community to politicians.  They felt America's prestige took a serious hit with that Obama blunder / gaffe.
6. Chris Wallace of Fox News was adamant that Sean Hannity & Bill O Reilly do not represent that majority of Fox and they are simply opinion shows as opposed to news.  He mentioned that freedom of the press is a constitutional right and part of what makes America stronger and unique.
7.  Regarding the government shutdown, lobbyists are becoming a bigger problem than Congress.  The parties have become further apart, because there is no longer a middle ground. Each side is underestimating the other sides willingness to keep this shutdown ongoing and Senator Coons was adamant that President Obama will not walk away from his signature accomplishment (i.e. Obamacare).
8.  Regarding the Egypt conflict, the general consensus was it will be another 5 to 10 years before we see change take place in Egypt.  The whole middle east is going through a seismic shift as Americans in the past were used to seeing Arabs chant, "death to America," and now they are seeing them say, "we want to be like America."
9.  Politicians are aware that the UN estimates Syria's refuge numbers will double in the next 15 months and go from 6 million to 12 million.  They are aware that it is not in the interest of America to see all of these refugees.
10. Although Russia and the US are at odds, they also cooperate in many areas. The Russians allow the US to provide convoys through Russia because they don't want the Taliban to win.  Putin is also working with the US on narcotics issues and although Putin is aligned with the Iranians, he still doesn't want them to get a nuke.   Consensus among people I spoke with or heard speak, was that the Iranian government is definitely seeking a nuclear weapon.
11. Ambassador Burns laid out America's foreign policy the past decades of being one that wanted stability and access to oil / gas markets.  This strategic interest outweighed America's democratic interest.  He did feel that by 2017, the US will be the leading energy provider to the world and when this happens, energy needs will shift from Saudi to American states such as Texas and Louisiana. When this happens, the US relationship with Saudi should start to change and the human rights violations they are committing will become more talked about.
12.  The Russian President has taken Obama for a ride and he shouldn't be trusted. He is a cynical man and former KGB officer, who recently stated that the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century was the collapse of the Soviet Union. This comment shows Putin's unrealistic thinking.
13. One of the biggest issues for America is dealing with the instability of North Korea. Major questions remain and to be discussed regarding the new President.

Visiting the Capital is a wonderful experience and touring the offices of Congress and meeting our elected officials is recommended.  DC politics can be very nasty but that shouldn't stop us from doing what we feel is in the best interest of our country.

Contact Congress and urge them to support President Obama's call for military action in Syria

Throughout history, numerous wars have been fought, millions of innocent have been killed, but rarely have Presidents used poisonous gases to kill their own citizens. On August 21^st, the Syrian government, led by Bashar Assad joined the infamous list of leaders to gas their own people, preceded only by the notorious Saddam Hussein.

Congress will debate and vote in the coming weeks whether to support President Obama’s desire for military intervention in Syria.  If you believe this is the correct course of action, it is imperative that you reach out to all of your representatives in Congress and ask them to support President Obama.   As evidenced by the British Parliament vote and subsequent comments by members of American congress, this could be a close vote.  Politicians need to hear from their constituents.

This website, http://www.contactingthecongress.org/, provides all of the contact info for your representatives in Congress.  When calling, it is extremely important to be courteous and polite when sharing your comments regarding Syria.

A few talking points to consider when calling Congress:

1.       For the past 2 years, the Syrian government have indiscriminately raped women in their homes, often times with their families forced to stand by in horror.

2.       For the past 2 years, the Syrian government have killed over 100,000 innocent people and tortured 1000’s more.

3.       For the past 2 years, the Syrian government have used chemical weapons on its people multiple times without any repercussions from the international community.

4.       For the past 2 years, Russia has blocked all UN action against Syria, knowing full well that it has a financial and political incentive for Assad to remain in power.

5.       For the past 2 years, over 5 million Syrians have been displaced from their homes and refugee camps have been set up in 4 neighboring countries.

The Assad regime are committing crimes against humanity, and the US has a moral and strategic responsibility to respond.    During America’s recent intervention in Libya, Gaddafi was overthrown and zero American soldiers were killed.  Syria will not be another Iraq or Afghanistan and we need to work to convince the public of this fact.

PBS, Big Bird, & Government Spending

According to Public Broadcasting Service's (PBS) recent tax return, they had $505 million of revenue and $477 million of expenses.  Of this $505 million in revenue, $10 million came from American taxpayers, in the form of "government grants."

In agreement with Mitt Romney, I see no reason why the government should use taxpayer money to fund a profitable TV station with half a trillion in annual revenue.  Take that $10 million and apply it to our national debt.

Is it possible ObamaCare will save American Businesses Money? 

By now, many of us are familiar with “Obamacare” and have heard how Obamacare will cost businesses extra money. The reality is it will possibly save them significant money. If my understanding / interpretation of Obamacare is correct, it requires businesses with over 50 employees to provide health care to its employees. It also states that an employee should not pay more than 9.5% of their gross salary for their insurance coverage. For example, if an employee has a salary of $30,000, he should not have to pay more than $2,850 for family coverage. I do not know of many companies out there that enable employees to have family coverage for $237.50 per month. Most family insurance plans cost companies about $1,000 per month. If the company absorbs 75% of the cost, they are passing 25% to employees, which would be about $250 per month.

If an employee has to pay more than 9.5% of their income on insurance, they have the option to purchase insurance on an open exchange. It is very possible that the open exchange will provide cheaper premiums, as you will have millions of people buying insurance, as compared to the hundreds of people a company may employ. The concept of economies of scale are being applied on the open exchange.

Furthermore, if an employee chooses to not participate in his employers insurance plan, due to the 9.5% requirement, and subsequently purchases insurance on the exchange, this could be a cost savings for the employer. The employer will be required to subsidize a portion of his employees purchase, but realistically, this subsidy may prove to be cheaper than what they are already paying. Instead of absorbing the 75% that they currently are, this could end up being reduced. The $1,000 quote that a company receives for family coverage for a company size of 500 employees, may be reduced to a $500 quote for an exchange with millions of insurance seekers.

Here is an email I sent to Columbia's admissions office and various Columbia faculty members. I encourage others to do something similarily. We should make a concentrated effort to have Sheherazad Jaafari's admission to Columbia revoked: ________________________________________________________________________________ Although you may not be directly involved in the acceptance of Sheherazad Jaafari, you should nonetheless feel ashamed of your school. We all know her acceptance into your prestigious program was not based on academics, but rather connections. If Barbara Walters did not contact your school and "recommend" Jaafari, she would not be a student at Columbia. Just think, a well deserving student who met your criteria for admission was not allowed in, because a connected student took her place. How does it feel knowing one of your students frequently emails and supports a Syrian President who has oversaw the killing of over 15,000 people in the past 15 months? Think about this for a moment: Her father is the Syrian Ambassador to the UN and her father has lied to the world about who is conducting the terror in Syria. Sheherazad is no different than her father. We all know, that Barbara Walters was extremely grateful to be the only American media person granted an interview with Assad. Sheherazad Jaafari did Walters a favor by securing the interview with the tyrannt Assad and subsequently Walters did her a favor by securing admission. Columbia should do the "ethical" thing and revoke Ms. Jaafari's admission immediately.

What role does interfaith play in Islamic history?

Many people may not know this, but the concept and practice of Muslim’s building and establishing relationships with Christians and Jews is rich in history. From an Islamic perspective, the very first migration that took place during Muhammed’s (PBUH) lifetime involved a small group of Meccan inhabitants and a Christian King in Abyssinia (which is also known as modern day Ethiopia).

Two years after Muhammed (PBUH) went public with his call of Islam and five years after the 1st Quranic revelation, the first migration in Islam took place. During these times (over 1400 years ago), the Quraysh were abusing, persecuting, and humiliating the Muslims as Islam was starting to blossom. As such, Muhammed (PBUH), suggested to a handful of believers, “If you went to the land of Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia), you would find there a king under whose command nobody suffers injustice. It is a land of sincerity in religion. You would remain there until God delivered you from what you suffer at present.”

Muhammed (PBUH) was referring to the Christian King Negus as he was respectful and fair to his people. Nearly one hundred people migrated to Abyssinia and it’s important to note that among those to go were Muhammed’s (PBUH) daughter Ruqqaya and her husband. Muhammed (PBUH) sent his daughter to live in a land where the ruler is Christian because he knew the leaders rules were based on justice. Additionally, Muhammed (PBUH) had two infant sons pass away and yet he felt comfortable sending his daughter to a faraway land, where the ruler was Christian.

When the Quraysh found out, they sent two emissaries to Negus to dissuade the King from offering protection to the Muslims and they brought the King many gifts to help in this persuasion.

Both the Muslims and the Quraysh presented their cases to the King. The Muslims talked about their persecution at the hands of Quraysh and also talked about similarities in faith (One God), rejection of idols, opposing injustice, etc. They introduced him to the Quran passages of the Virgin Mary and this made the King happy as Muslims had similarities with Christians and they also heavily respected and loved Jesus.

The Quraysh were upset and told the King that Muslims don’t see Jesus as a Son of God, but rather as a Prophet of God. Although differences in faith existed, the King respected these differences and offered the Muslims protection in his land. He sent Quraysh back to Mecca with their gifts and allowed the Muslims to live in a Christian land under the pillars of peace, prosperity, and dignity.

The Muslims were the religious minority in Abyssinia, yet they were protected, tolerated, and received by King Negus and his community. The Muslims saw Negus as a man of principle and justice as such the majority of Muslims stayed in Abyssinia for about 15 years and eventually migrated to Medina.

During these times, Muhammed (PBUH) would maintain strong ties with different clans and kin who were not Muslim. Muhammed (PBUH) loved his uncle Abu Talib very much and was with his uncle at his death, even though he died as non-Muslim. Additionally, Muhammed (PBUH) had another non-Muslim uncle named Abbas. Abbas was tremendously trusted by Muhammed (PBUH) and as such Muhammed (PBUH) confined in Abbas and had him take part in private meetings involving the future of the community. Muhammed (PBUH) told Abbas confidential info regarding the Medina migration. Even though Abbas remained a polytheist till his death, Muhammed (PBUH) showed him respect and confidence. Muhammed (PBUH) used to establish relationships in the name of trust and principles and not exclusively on the basis of religious affiliation.

His companions learned this quality and implemented it into their lives. Muslim females were often escorted by Christian men when traveling as the men were trusted and heavily respected. Additionally, Muhammed (PBUH) used to handle business accounts of Muslim and Non-Muslims and always applied principles of honesty and justice. He also showed compassion to those who left Islam under pressure or persecution. As an example, there was a case of a Muslim who went to Abyssinia and later became Christian. Muhammed (PBUH) never instructed anyone to harass or ill treat the man as Islam’s attitude is to respect people’s freedom and individual choices.

When Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina, influential and established presence of Jewish and Christian communities in Medina already existed. When Muhammed (PBUH) and his companions arrived in Medina, his instructions were to spread peace, feed the hungry, honor kinship ties, pray while people sleep, and you shall enter paradise in peace. Upon arriving, Muhammed (PBUH) also drew up mutual assistance agreements between the Muslims and the Jews. It demanded no conversions and referred to the principles of justice, equality, and dignity. People were to have the same rights and same duties and if conflicts were to break out, all would stand together and not enter into separate alliances or agreements. The relationships between the three faiths were based on the framework of “People of the Book.” All had received revealed messages of God (Torah, Gospel, and Koran).

A few years into Medina life, there was some conflict between a Muslim and Jewish tribe. A Muslim subsequently stole something and wanted to blame a Jew. Quranic revelation denounced the Muslims action and proclaimed the Jews innocence. The Quran reinforces principles of justice and respect and teaches us not to have hatred in our actions regardless of faith. Another illustration pertains to the time Muhammed (PBUH) stood up at a funeral procession for a Jew in Medina and his people were surprised. Muhammed’s (PBUH) responded by asking “was this not a human soul?”

In this era of negative media, it is important to remind ourselves that our differences make us universally stronger and the more we interact with one another, the better our relationships will grow.

Introduction to SAC Georgia

In March 2011, a group of young boys, painted in graffiti style, “The people want to bring down the regime,” in Deraa, Syria. Excited by the revolutions taking place throughout the region, these children, under the age of eighteen, were arrested by the Syrian government. Instead of being treated as juveniles, they were held and abused by their own government. They were returned to their families bruised, beaten, and missing fingernails.

After almost 50 years of “emergency laws” in Syria, the people chose to peacefully rise up and demand an end to government corruption, injustice, and tyranny. When these basic requests were met with bullets, the people insisted on a transition to democracy. The Syrian government retaliated with more intimidation, arrest, torture, and killings. The international community responded through sanctions and isolation of the Syrian government. The government of Syria claims these events are orchestrated by outside adversaries, but the question remains, why is the Syrian government so afraid of democracy? If President Assad believes these events are being initiated by hostile forces outside of Syria, why not hold democratic elections and see who the Syrian citizen’s vote for? The truth is, the Syrian government operates as a mafia system, centered on greed, control, and deceit.

With the Atlanta region being home to many Syrian Americans of all faiths, the local community felt compelled to support the citizens of Syria. As such, we initiated contact with the national office of the Syrian American Council and inquired about starting a chapter in Georgia. We wanted to be a local voice for those being oppressed by the Assad regime. Although Syria is nearly 6,500 miles away, many of us in this state have families who have been directly impacted by the democracy and freedom movement currently taking place in Syria.

As such, the Syrian community of Georgia started a local chapter of the Syrian American Council (SAC). SAC is a grassroots organization devoted to promoting educational, civic, economic, and human development throughout Syria. Additionally, it aspires to build bridges of understanding and cooperation between American and Syrian people and institutions. More detailed information about SAC can be found at www.sacouncil.com.

Although SAC Georgia is still in its infancy, we have been very proactive in our activities. Besides our ongoing membership drive, we are working to establish relationships with policy makers throughout Georgia. SAC Georgia is working on educating the community about current events in Syria, while at the same time creating dialogue with our local, state, and federal government representatives. Whether it is assisting the refugees who have taken shelter in neighboring Turkey, holding town hall meetings in metro Atlanta, or advocating on behalf of Syria, we look forward to introducing ourselves to all of you and building necessary relationships needed to make positive change.

Syria

Recent events in Syria have caused President Obama’s administration, Congress, and intelligence agencies to question America’s role in the uprising. Americans of all demographics, political parties, and faiths have expressed valid concern about the direction of our country. With unemployment nearing 10% and debt totaling $14 trillion, the policies of the past are proving to be incompatible with the priorities of the future.

Historically, American foreign policy promoted and preferred stability over democracy as evident by our unequivocal support of despotic Middle Eastern leaders. These Arab leaders were never elected by their people and often suppressed dissent by torture, imprisonment, or execution. Yet, our government has remained publicly silent as the Kings of Saudi Arabia forbade women from driving. Hosni Mubarak’s government pocketed over $50 billion, aided by US foreign aid paid for by American tax payer money, without any tangible result. Instead of taking the $50 billion and building Egypt’s infrastructure and economy, Mubarak and his cronies used this money to further alienate common Egyptians, stifle prosperity, and create an uneven playing field. The currency of Mubarak’s government centered on briberies, “commissions,” and other forms of unethical dealings. Whether it is Jordan, the Gulf States, or North Africa, our policies in the region have given cause to the uprisings currently taking place.

In the past six months, the Syrian government, led by “President” Assad, has killed over 2,000 people. When the world asked Assad to reform, he responded with bullets. When America placed sanctions on Assad, he responded with more torture and more killings. Oddly, he is still being asked to reform and is being told that if he is unwilling to reform, he should step down, or transition the country into democracy. On behalf of all the mothers and fathers who lost someone in Syria, what about justice for those families? He is directly responsible for the killings of over 2,000 innocent people as well as thousands who are currently missing, unjustly imprisoned, or being tortured. Instead of “advising” President Assad of his options, not one country has spoken out in regards to punishing Assad for his crimes against humanity. The International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands should be President Assad’s destination and not some comfy resort if he chooses to “reform” or step down.

American troops must not be involved in this conflict. The sanctions currently being led by Secretary Clinton are positive steps, but for all of their effect, the Assad family will still be the wealthiest in Syria. Were America can lead, along Turkey and other allies in the region, is to bring about criminal charges against the Assad dynasty. Too many people are dying and President Assad is only being asked to reform. That is an absurd proposition.

It is time for our foreign policy to match the values that we promote at home. We have the unique opportunity to show the Arab world that we can resolve this issue without military intervention. We have the chance to show the region that the policies of justice, freedom, and pursuit of happiness apply to Syria as well. The people of Syria and other Arab countries want democracy, and America can promote this value without any tanks. A democratic Middle East will eventually reduce the debt and future American taxpayer spending and provide real, not perceived, stability in the region. Only then can we refocus on becoming the innovative leader of the world.

Afghanistan, Opium, and the Taliban

Recent developments in Afghanistan have led many to debate what America’s best course of action should entail. The amount that America has invested from a logistics, financial, and philosophical perspective proves that “quitting,” is not an option. The current dilemma facing America’s political brain trust is simple: How does America move forward in a strategic format that will allow it to achieve its desired results?

I am of the opinion that America’s resources are being mismanaged in Afghanistan. With the Obama administration split on how to manage the war and with the public becoming restless and the media more engaging, now might be a time to indiscriminately revisit our strategy.

The Taliban / Al Qaeda movement in Afghanistan appears to be well founded. Unlike the American war in Afghanistan, which is funded by American tax payers, the source of funds for the Taliban is quite different. Consider the following. Are the Taliban in Afghanistan funded by Afghani tax revenue? One can easily conclude this answer to be no. Are the Taliban in Afghanistan funded by foreign bank transfers? Absolutely not, as American intelligence is capable of tracing every source of international wire transfer. Are the Taliban selling goods and services in Afghanistan that are enabling them to fully fund themselves? Once again, revenue from domestic goods would hardly provide the adequate finances for such an expensive war.

It is evident that the Taliban is functionally operative, well equipped, organized, and appropriately funded. It is also clear that the sources of “funding,” must be coming from within Afghanistan. As such, it is important to consider the impact of Afghanistan’s opium production in relation to the Taliban’s self funding. It is easy to forget that Afghanistan has among the largest producing fields of opium in the world. This opium is directly financing the Taliban in Afghanistan.

My suggestion to the decision makers in Washington is plain. Instead of dropping bombs that kill militants and innocent civilians, why not place your resources on the core problem. If you eliminate the opportunity for the Taliban to constantly fund themselves, you will eliminate their ability to restock and reenergize. Additionally, you will build great goodwill amongst the Afghani civilians, many of which are parents, whom wish to keep their children away from these addictive drugs.

Again, ask yourself this question. How do you win the hearts and minds of a country that distrusts you? Do you erratically drop bombs on populated areas or do you focus on the youth of the country? When bombs are dropped on civilians and innocence is lost, revenge becomes the Afghans course of action.

All wars have a source of funding. The source of the Taliban’s funding is pretty clear, yet America’s response has been disillusioned and mismanaged. If America is committed to winning the war in Afghanistan, it is time they revise their course of action. Destroy all the opium fields and you will vastly reduce the Taliban’s abilities. Continuing to bomb the country and causing collateral damage will not win this war. It is time the American administration recognizes that if you control the source of the Taliban’s funding, you will control the war.

Sending another 40,000 troops to Afghanistan or possibly having Muslim nations become an international peacekeeping presence will only lead to more death, destruction, and failure.

September 11th - Eight Years Later

It has been almost one decade since the horrible events of 9/11 took place. I wanted to share some insights on the beauty of America and humanity in general, as this tragic event, has directly impacted me in various ways.

All throughout my life, I don't ever recall experiencing discrimination prior to 9/11. At the time of 9/11, I was working for a public accounting firm. A few months after 9/11, one of the partners in the firm came up to me and without hesitation told me that I was starting to look like a terrorist due to my maintaining a small beard. I don't believe he realized the impact of his statement, nor do I believe his statement was intended to harm, but it was a comment that definitely had more meaning after 9/11.

At a subsequent place of employment, I had a manager who was unaware of my Syrian origin. After finding out of my origin, the manager sarcastically stated that "had I known you were Syrian prior to hiring you, I would not have hired a terrorist." Once again, I do not believe this comment was made by a racist, etc., but rather made by someone who was using bad judgment.

The 3rd incident that comes to mind was when my wife and I were in an elevator at the airport. One lady, with a baby in a stroller freaked out when she saw my wife and me in the elevator with her and the doors closing. She immediately got out of the elevator with her baby. I genuinely felt sorry for this lady afterwards, as fear caused this reaction. It was upsetting, but something out of my control.

Since moving to DC in 2005, I have been fortunate to see the beautiful work of interfaith organizations, working in harmony to make America a more pluralistic society. Every Friday afternoon, I am required to attend a prayer service at a mosque. With options being limited due to a one hour lunch break, a local church has opened its doors for the Muslim community to allow us to have our service. It is absolutely amazing and remarkable that opportunities for dialogue have become stronger post 9/11. Kudos to the Church of the Epiphany for this kind gesture. http://www.epiphanydc.org

Additionally, about a year ago, I was working from home and had to attend the Friday service. As I recently moved to Northern Virginia, I was unaware of local facilities, but after doing some online research, I found another interfaith organization that had made its facilities open for the service. This facility, Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation, http://www.nvhcreston.org/, enabled Muslims to come to a Jewish Center for prayer services.

Both of the above instances reiterated to me what is right about America and provides hope for the future. Terrorism has no place in any religion and under no circumstances can be condoned, promoted, or validated. It is incomprehensible for anyone to disrespect the value of life. If more energy was spent on killing each other with kindness, rather than weapons, humanity would reap the benefits.

Meltdown of American Foreign Policy - What's gone wrong?

If you remember the Afghan - Russian War, you will recall the influence and impact of America's foreign policy and intelligence community. One will recall the strategic implications of the US siding with the Afghan freedom fighters. One will recall the significance of minimizing the spread of Russian influence and strength in the region. As such, the US made a calculated decision to support those fighting on behalf of Afghanistan. Looking back at history, one can conclude this was a smart and tactical decision that yielded the desired results. The Russians left Afghanistan without a win and America's enemy at the time was defeated.

Now we turn to the most recent Iraq - US war, which started post 9-11. Without denial, Saddam was a dictator and tyrant who deserved to be held accountable for his actions. I have no objections to his outcome, as during his Presidency, he was responsible for the killings on thousands of innocent people. But let's discuss the impact of America's intervention in this war? Before the war started, the American administration (at the time led by President Bush) must have had a vision for Iraq. Let's discuss these visions one by one:

1. To provide democracy for Iraqis: I don't believe this was the case at all. If democracy was the desired outcome and only desired outcome, why wouldn't America intervene in the numerous hot spots of the world, where democracy remains just a dream?

2. To have a direct impact on the control of Iraqi oil: I consider this to be one of the main reasons of the Iraq war. As China and India (both of whom account for almost 33% of the world's population) become more industrialized, their demand for oil will increase. As these countries transition from 3rd world status to 2nd and 1st world status, their needs have changed. For various Chinese and Indians, having a car used to be a luxury for a small percentage of society. As American jobs have been offshored to India & China(to please shareholders of publicly traded companies), those respective economies have grown, while ours remains stagnant, if not contracting. Imagine a world where the demand for oil was greater than the supply? Now imagine the US without access to this supply? Think of who the main oil producers are in this world: Venezuela (whom we have a rocky relationship with), Iran (whom we have a rocky relationship with) and Saudi (a country who suppresses a women's right to drive). If America lost access and control to Iraqi oil, gasoline could easily reach $10 per gallon (as is almost the case in many European countries).

3. To protect Israel's security: Many people will say this was a reason to justify the war, but I feel this argument is not as strong as item 2 above and item 4 below.

4. To minimize Iran's strength in the region: To me, this point has significance and merit. Unfortunately, it also shows how weak American foreign policy has become, as compared to our recent history. In brief, America intended to invade Iraq to weaken Iran's influence in the region. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened. Iranian intelligence, influence, military, and more now have a significant say in daily Iraqi affairs. Iran has infiltrated Iraq's key decision making body and has elevated its grasp and power in region.

If America is to once again become the leader in world affairs, it needs to plan, conduct, and wrap up its operations more strategically. It is time to revisit who are allies are and what they each independently represent.

Financial Statement Summary of Navigant Consulting (Ticker: NCI)


Segment Overview

The financials of Navigant Consulting are derived from four separate operating segments. These segments include consulting income generated from 1. North American Dispute and Investigative Services, 2. North American Business Consulting Services, 3. International Consulting Services, and 4. Economic Consulting Services. Within the past three years (2008 – 2006), almost 90% of revenues and profits have been generated solely based on activities pertaining to North American services.

Concentration of Revenues

Navigant’s revenues are reliant on a select basis of clients and thus create potential risk. During the past three 10K filings (2006 – 2008), almost 23% of total revenues were attributed to 20 clients. Furthermore, Navigant’s top 10 clients amount to 15% of total revenues in the same filing period. Between 2006 and 2008, there were no clients that accounted for more than 5 percent of total revenues.


Financial Data

Although Navigant has seen consecutive revenue growth each year since 2004, the last five quarters have produced opposite results. Since the 1st quarter of 2008 until the most recent 1st quarter of 2009, revenues have decreased in 5 consecutive quarters. Various red flags can be derived from the financial data associated with the past 5 quarters:

1. The company has added an additional 1.5% of staff, yet revenues have decreased by 12%.

2. Net income has decreased by 50%, yet billing utilizations have only decreased by 8%.

3. Cash and cash equivalents have decreased by 12%, yet company debt has only decreased by 2%.

4. Receivables have decreased by 9%, yet average days outstanding for receivables have increased by 5%.

In short, the last five reporting quarters of Navigant Consulting have been adversely impacted by the recent economic downturn. Although Navigant has acquired almost 10 reputable businesses since 2006, the financial returns have yet to justify this acquisition.

Financial Statement Trends of Navigant Consulting (NCI), a Publicly Traded Company

In May 2008, Navigant Consulting acquired Chicago Partners LLC for $73 million. Chicago Partners was a 90 person consultant firm focused on economic and financial analyses of legal and business issues principally for law firms, corporations and government agencies. As such, this acquisition led to the creation of Navigant’s fourth business segment, “Economic Consulting Services.”

In the 1st quarter of 2009, this new segment accounted for 8% of total revenues, even though it comprised only 5% of total staff. With an average billable rate of $343 per hour as compared to an average of $242 for Navigant's other three segments, the future for “Economic Consulting Services” appears to be filled with financial potential, continued growth opportunity, and bottom line results. Furthermore, this segment maintains a 96% billing utilization, as compared to an average of 76% for the other three segments. This newest segment is the only operation experiencing significant growth and as such, should positively impact Navigant’s financial statement trends.

In review of the financials between 2006 and 1st quarter 2009, a few prominent financial trends are worth noting:

1. Between 2006 and 2008, revenue increased almost 20%, yet net income decreased by nearly 25%. This is largely due in part to Navigant’s proactive acquisition strategy. With current economic conditions being less predictable and more challenging, Navigant will need to undertake cost savings initiatives in order to protect profitability. A few items presently being discussed include staff reductions, office space consolidations, and salary freezes.

2. Due to the current market situation associated with the world economy, Navigant’s total revenues, margins and profits are likely to be impacted by a significant decline. As the most recent 2009 10Q filing presents, significant challenges appear on the horizon. For instance, between 4th quarter 2008 and 1st quarter 2009; cash has decreased by 65%, while accounts payable has increased by 24%. As of March 31, 2009, Navigant had more accounts payable than cash on hand. Additionally, Navigant has now had 5 consecutive quarters of revenue decline.

3. Between 4th quarter 2008 and 1st quarter 2009, Navigant’s debt has increased by almost $30 million to $260 million. This 12% increase from the prior quarter presents significant risk to Navigant, as their present credit line is $275 million, with an option to increase to $375 million. As debt increases and revenue and cash decrease, management is obligated to make cost savings decisions.
